Hemp refers to varieties of the cannabis plant which are cultivated for non-drug use, and for industrial and other goods such as rope, clothes, fuel, etc. The Cannabis Plant produces chemicals called CANNABINOIDS which produce the "high" effect / mental + physical effects when utilized. The natural herbal cannabinoid (there are over 60 known herbal cannabinoids) occur naturally in the Cannabis plant - this can be viewed under a good microscope in the form of glistening viscous resin bulb-like structures called TRICHOMES. The primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant is Tetrahydrocannabinol - otherwise known as THC. Isolated by Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni in Rehovot, Israel in 1964 When Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is cold in its pure form, it becomes a glassy solid, while when it is warmed, it becomes a really sticky viscous substance which leads to its various varieties.

The name marijuana usually refers to the dried (bud) flowering clusters of the cannabis plant, and has its origins of its name coming from mexican or latin american in origin. The term marijuana largely rose in popularity due to the efforts of drug prohibitionists in the United STates during the 1920's and 1930's. Hemp refers to a source of industrial materials and under the name Cannabis refers to the entire broad category or as the legal term for medicinal uses.
